For healthcare IT professionals in hospitals and medical practices, the challenge is how to effectively support the iPad while also ensuring security of both the device and any patient information. Now that Apple has taken the wraps of Mac OS X Lion (10.7), iLife ’11, and the next generation of MacBook Air hardware, what does it all mean for Mac users over the coming months? I take a look at the potential (good and bad) of brining iOS technologies to Mac OS X in the forms of enhanced multi-touch the Mac App Store; full-screen applications that auto-save and auto-restore, Launchpad as an iOS-style application launcher (not a fan yet), and Mission Control as a union of existing technologies (Expose, Spaces, and Dashboard).

RIM’s recently announced PlayBook seems to have the perfect enterprise pedigree compared to today’s iOS 3.x iPad. Next month, long before the PlayBook ships, iOS 4.2 for iPad will be out and it will offer a great range of enterprise features that level the playing field. Combined with an existing presence in business and other factors, iPads running iOS 4.2 and even Android tablets stand to make adoption of the PlayBook far from certain.
